General Rules and Regulations
Conduct
Illinois State University’s codes of conduct are enforced at the Student Fitness Center at all times. Use of Illinois State University facilities is a privilege and participants are expected to be good citizens and respect the rights of others. Individuals who engage in unacceptable or irresponsible behavior may have their access to the Student Fitness Center revoked or modified indefinitely as determined by the Director of Campus Recreation and the Student Fitness Center. Students may be subject to further university disciplinary action as outlined in the Illinois State University Code of Student Conduct: Illinois State University Code of Student Conduct .
Identification (ID) Card Requirements/Access Control
Illinois State University students and all Student Fitness Center (SFC) members must show proof of membership by presenting a valid ISU Redbird Card or SFC membership card to gain access to the activity space of the Student Fitness Center. Campus Recreation is fully authorized to deny entrance to the Student Fitness Center without possession of valid identification noted above. Students and/or members who forget their ID card will receive a one-time exemption to enter the SFC per semester. If a student or member forgets their ID card on an occasion(s) in the same semester following the use of the one-time exemption, they will be unable to gain access to the activity spaces of the Student Fitness Center.
KNR students are required to present a valid ISU Redbird card to enter the activity space to attend class. If a student forgets their ID card and wants to attend class, the student must go to the Campus Recreation Suite (Room 103) to get approval from a receptionist in order to enter the SFC. This is also considered a one-time exemption, and it should be noted that this takes time to verify and may result in late arrival for class.
Misuse of ID or Membership Card
ID cards and membership cards are property of the University. Misuse of ID’s to gain facility access is considered fraud. Campus Recreation team members will confiscate misused ID cards and will as the person(s) to leave the facility. Misuse of an ID card may also result in loss of membership privileges.
Public Display of Affection (PDA)
Engaging in inappropriate public display of affection in the Student Fitness Center is strictly prohibited.
Proper Attire
In an effort to promote safety, reduce the spread of communicable diseases and prevent additional wear and tear on the equipment, all participants are asked to wear appropriate athletic clothing while working out or participating in activities. Participants not wearing appropriate clothing or clothing found to be offensive will be told to adjust as needed or asked to leave the facility. The following are considered appropriate and permitted:
- Athletic/tennis shoes with non-marking soles are required in all activity areas, except certain fitness classes, such as Pilates and Yoga.
- Sandals, bare feet, crocs, and steel-toed boots are not permitted.
- Appropriate attire must cover the chest and buttocks. Shirts must be worn that cover the chest in all public areas, except for the pool and locker rooms.
- Swimsuits are required in the pool area. A clean t-shirt may also be worn. Swimming apparel is not permitted in any other activity areas of the facility.
- Jeans, pants, or shorts with rivets/buttons are not permitted in the activity areas.
Campus Recreation reserves the right to restrict the use of any apparel or equipment deemed unsafe.
Smoking and Tobacco
Illinois State University is a Smoke and Tobacco Free Campus in accordance with the Smoke-Free Campus Act (110 ILCS 64 et seq.), the Smoke-Free Illinois Act (410 ILCS 82 et seq.), and the School Code Tobacco Prohibition (105 ILCS 510-20.5b) . Smoking and tobacco use is prohibited on campus, including buildings, grounds, and parking lots.
Alcohol and Drugs
Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs may not be consumed prior to or while using the facility. Individuals may not use the facility while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Food, Chewing Gum, and Beverages
- Food, chewing gum, and drinks, other than water, are only permitted in the lobby area of the SFC.
- Water is the only drink permitted in the activity spaces of the SFC and must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container.
Mobile Technology
For the safety and comfort of our members, the use of mobile technology is not permitted in the pool, restrooms or locker room areas. Members may use mobile technology in other areas of the facility for access to music or phone; however, if disruptive behavior (talking loudly) is noticed or reported, the member will be asked to refrain from use of the device.
Personal Transportation
Bicycles, rollerblades, roller skates, and skateboards are prohibited within all facilities. Personal items brought into the facility must be secured in a locker. Bike racks are available in front of the SFC and at the east and west entrances of McCormick.
Locker Rooms
There are five main locker rooms in the SFC. Two are for faculty/staff, two are for students and one is an all-gender locker room that is equipped with two private shower/changing areas. The following guidelines are required in the locker room spaces:
- No glass is permitted in the locker rooms
- Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items due to unauthorized use. Due to photo/video capabilities, use of mobile technology is prohibited in locker room areas.
- Daily use lockers will be available in the locker rooms. All items will need to be removed from these daily use lockers at the end of the day as Campus Recreation team members will be disinfecting all areas of the locker rooms. Any items left in a locker or in the locker room will be taken to the Welcome Desk and placed in the lost and found.
- Only swimsuits are to be placed in the Suitmate water extractor located in the locker rooms and private changing room areas. Please read and follow the directions to use the extractor.
Semester/Annual Locker Rentals
Permanent lockers are available to SFC members for purchase on a semester and annual basis.
- Rental lockers are pre-assigned with locks provided by Campus Recreation and are available for a fee on first-come, first serve basis.
- Lockers are to be used for legitimate recreational purposes only.
- All locks and lockers are the property of Illinois State University.
- Campus Recreation is not responsible for abandoned items.
- No items may be hung outside of the lockers.
- Locker rentals are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
- In the event the locker needs to be emptied, items will be put in a secure location behind the Welcome Center desk for one week. If belongings are not claimed within one week, the items will be disposed of in an appropriate manner.
- We encourage our members to only bring necessary items to the Student Fitness Center. Valuables should be left at home and individuals are responsible for securing personal belongings in lockers. Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal property or for items left in unsecured lockers. Please report any suspicious behavior to any Student Fitness Center team member.
Daily Lockers
- Daily lockers are available in the locker rooms and on the second floor of the Student Fitness Center.
- Combination locks are available at the Welcome Desk for daily use free of charge with a valid SFC membership.
- The combination lock must be returned after each use and personal items must be removed from the locker. If the lock is not returned by the time the building closes, the lock and items will be removed by a Campus Recreation team member and a $10.00 cleaning and handling fee will be assessed to the renter and must be paid prior to retrieving the locker contents.
- Personal locks are permitted; however, they must be removed by the time the building closes. Failure to remove a personal lock will result in the removal of the lock by a Campus Recreation team member and a $10.00 cleaning and handling fee will be assessed to the renter and must be paid prior to retrieving locker contents.

Towel Service
Towel Service can be purchased at the Welcome Center desk daily, semesterly, or annually.
- Towel pick-up and return are located at the equipment check-in desk.
- A Redbird card or Student Fitness Center member card is required at pick-up to verify towel service.
- Towel service provides members one towel at a time. If the member returns a towel, another towel can be provided.
- All towels must be returned after use. A Redbird Card or Student Fitness Center member card is required to return the towel. Lost or stolen towels will be the responsibility of those using the service and result in a $10 replacement charge.
- Towels are also available on a daily basis for $1 per towel, per day.
Security
We encourage our members to only bring necessary items to the Student Fitness Center. Valuables should be left at home and individuals are responsible for securing personal belongings in lockers. Please report any suspicious behavior to any Student Fitness Center team member.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found is located at the Welcome Center desk.
- Personal hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc. will be disposed of each day at closing time. Other items will be kept for one week and then disposed of appropriately.
- Lost IDs and membership cards will be placed at the Welcome Center desk for retrieval.
- Wallets, cell phones, and other items deemed to be of high value will be placed in the lockable cabinet for security purposes. These items may be retrieved by the Facility Manager on duty.
- Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged property.
Miscellaneous Items
Gym bags, backpacks, and purses are not permitted in activity areas. These items left on the floor in open areas present opportunity for theft and may cause tripping hazards for other patrons. Items must be stored in daily lockers for the safety and security of all participants.
Accessibility Information
The SFC is designed to accommodate patrons of varying abilities. Campus Recreation team members are available at any time to provide special assistance to members with disabilities. Members area encouraged to provide as much advance notices as possible to the facility prior to a visit to help ensure that their request for special assistance may be met. Service animals are allowed in all facilities. Crates for service animals are available in the pool and on the fitness floor while the member is working out.
Pets

Media Policy
Personal photography and videotaping are permitted at Campus Recreation facilities except for restrooms, locker rooms and pools. Personal photography and videotaping are defined as media of friends/family obtaining informally for personal/private use. Personal photography used for commercial purposes is not allowed. Taking photos or videos of individuals without their consent is prohibited and is cause for immediate removal from Campus Recreation facilities.
Academic photography and videotaping are permitted in Campus Recreation facilities with prior authorization except for restrooms, locker rooms and pool. Academic photography and videotaping are defined as media obtained and/or reproduced for academic purposes including class projects, University promotions and information. Please contact the marketing team for authorization.

Closing Time
All areas, including locker rooms, should be vacated prior to building closure. Reminders will be announced over our PA system at 15 minutes, 5 minutes and at the closing time of the facility. All rented equipment should be returned to the Welcome Desk.
Inclement Weather
The SFC will generally be open during regular hours, though all or portions of facilities may be closed. KNR classes held in the SFC will only be canceled if Illinois State University is closed due to inclement weather. Formal programs such as classes and intramural sports may be canceled or postponed if playing conditions and/or instructor travel are affected.
