Graduate Assistants

  • GA - Pre-Professional - Campus Recreation - Fitness Program
    (Fall 2024 - Spring 2025)

    The Fitness Program encompasses Group Fitness and Personal Training. The Fitness program provides a comprehensive schedule of group fitness classes, custom class programs and individual, partner and small group personal training for students, faculty/staff, and other members. Participants have an opportunity to experience over 60 different classes weekly taught by student instructors. The energy-packed, diverse Group Fitness program gives participants the opportunity to achieve their fitness goals. Personal Trainers work closely with clients to provide safe and efficient workouts with innovative ways to improve client's health while helping them achieve their fitness goals.     Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    -Assisting with the development and coordination of fitness special events and instructional programs.
    -Assisting with the development and implementation of fitness class formats.
    -Teaching group fitness classes and personal training as needed.
    -Coordinating and implementing surveys and inputting results.
    -Planning and evaluating program publicity.
    -Mentoring student team members.
    -Assisting with participant data collection and statistical analysis.
    -Hiring, training, supervising and evaluating instructors and personal trainers.
    -Participating in coordinating, programming, and scheduling student team members.
    -Assist in conducting and planning monthly team member meetings and development sessions.
    -Update and implement instructor training and staff manuals.
    -Inventory control of equipment and music.
    -Maintaining equipment and assessing equipment needs.
    -Assist in teaching the ACE Group Fitness Prep Course and ACE Personal Training Prep Course.
    -Collaborate with other Campus Recreation team members and assist with department events as needed.
    -Serve as an instructor for American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid classes for Campus Recreation team members.
    -Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary by the department.

  • GA - Pre-Professional - Campus Recreation - Adventure Program
    (Fall 2024 - Spring 2025)

    The Adventure Program is comprised of 4 main areas: Outdoor Trips, Outdoor Equipment Rentals, Indoor Climbing, and Team Building. The Adventure program operates 14 – 20 outdoor trips to ISU students each year that range in duration from 5 hours to 8 days in length. Trip activities include: hiking, camping, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, outdoor climbing, and backpacking. The Adventure Program offers equipment rental to the ISU community at reasonable prices from sleeping bags to kayaks and everything in-between. The Team Building Program works with groups to develop skills in leadership, problem solving, decision making, communication, and more. A new High Ropes Course was just completed to expand the current programs. The Indoor Climbing Wall offers instructional and recreational climbing of the 47-foot high wall and 15-foot bouldering cave. Working under the Coordinator of Adventure Programs, the Adventure Graduate Assistant will play a significant role in the overall organization and administration of a comprehensive Adventure Program. The primary focus of the Adventure Graduate Assistant will be determined based on candidates desires and program needs, but may be asked to help within all four areas of the program.     Specific duties include:

    -Plan and implement a variety of adventure activities.
    -Instruct and train students on outdoor technical skills.
    -Assist with hiring, supervision, training, and evaluation of student team members.
    -Assist in the daily operation of the Redbird Adventure Center.
    -Assist with inventory, inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of outdoor equipment.
    -Develop and implement program policies, procedures, and risk management plans.
    -Maintain participant statistics and program cost analyses.
    -Develop civic engagement activities that address leadership development, diversity, and community responsibility.
    -Support all areas of the Adventure Program as needed.
    -Graduate Assistant schedule may include nights and weekends based on program needs.
    -Collaborate with other Campus Recreation team members and assist with department events as needed.
    -Serve as an instructor for American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid classes for Campus Recreation team members.
    -Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary by the department.
