Position Information

Campus Recreation offers student employment in a variety of program areas within the department. The descriptions listed below provide a summary of the duties and requirements of each position

  • Administration

Office Assistant (Administrative Office)

Responsibilities include covering the administrative front office in the absence of the Office Support Associate to include answering the telephone, assisting guests, and receiving packages. Other responsibilities include delivering and picking up items from various administrative departments on campus and off-campus. General office duties include, but are not limited to, entering data, making photocopies, scanning, filing, shredding and creating or updating documents. Required proficiency in Word and Excel and the ability to learn other programs are needed. Other duties will be assigned as deemed necessary. The person must be responsible, trustworthy, and reliable. Accurate data entry is a must. The position requires the person to have a valid driver's license.

Business Intern

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, entering data, reconciling the daily work, processing invoices, and various account reconciliations. Required proficiency in Access and Excel with the ability to learn other programs as needed. Other duties to be assigned as necessary. The person must have attention to detail, an excellent work ethic, and a willingness to learn. Accurate data entry is a must. The position requires the person to have a valid driver’s license. The person for this position needs to have availability during standard business hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Preferred majors include Business with accounting experience, Accounting, or Actuarial Science.

  • Adventure

Adventure Trip Leader

Trip Leaders are responsible for co-leading small groups during off-campus adventure activities including but not limited to: hiking, kayaking, canoeing, climbing, camping, cooking, backpacking, and/or caving. Trip Leaders assist in the trip planning and preparation, equipment packing, cleaning & maintenance, driving university vehicles, teach skills, and supervise the group for the duration of the trip. Applicants will be hired and trained to lead trips ranging from afternoons to multiday expeditions. Trip Leaders also will process equipment rentals, register participants for trips and activities, provide outstanding customer service, perform credit card transactions, and other duties as assigned. Previous experience participating or leading outdoor activities is preferred, but not required. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license along with a clean driving record. Candidates must obtain a Wilderness First Aid or equivalent cerfification within their first year. Trip Leaders may have the opportunity to recieve additional training for the Climbing Wall Supervisor, and/or Team Building Facilitator positions.

  • Average hours: 3 - 4 trips per semester average, and rental assistance varying on demand

Climbing Wall Supervisor

Climbing Wall Supervisors are responsible for managing the safety of the climbing wall area, assisting participants with climbing equipment, belaying climbers, and maintaining climbing routes. Climbing Wall Supervisors may also be responsible for inspecting equipment, setting routes, teaching belay workshops and climbing instruction as assigned. Climbing Wall Supervisors serve a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the entire Adventure program. Candidates must obtain a Green Belay Card status and feel comfortable climbing the wall by the end of the onboarding process. Climbing Wall Supervisors will need to become lead belay certified within one year of being hired.

Team Building Facilitator

Team Building Facilitators are responsible for leading groups through a variety of activities to help them develop as a team. These activities include: portable initiatives, games, low, and high ropes course elements. Facilitators will belay participants for dynamic course elements and instruct participants on the use of lanyards to navigate the course as needed. Facilitators work with diverse and dynamic populations. Facilitation includes planning an activity sequence based on group goals, instruct participants, monitor physical and emotional safety, and reflecting with the group on their experience. Other responsibilities include maintaining equipment, inspecting facilities, assessing group needs, and adapting programs to those needs. Passion for team building or previous experience facilitating experiential education programs such as ropes/challenge courses, initiatives and games preferred but not required.  Facilitators must be able to provide their own transportation or use public transportation.

  • Operating Hours: Mon – Sun, many weekend programs between 8 am – 4 pm, some evenings
  • Aquatics

Lifeguard

Responsibilities include providing a safe indoor aquatic facility, enforcing all pool and facility rules and regulations as well as educating patrons. Secondary responsibilities include filling out required records and reports and submitting them to the proper person or office, performing maintenance or other tasks such as tightening or putting in lane lines, checking and restocking first aid kits, and answering patron’s questions. Lifeguards will also assist with ensuring laundry is clean and folded for the department during each shift. A current Lifeguard Certification is preferred but not required.

  • Bowling and Billiards Center (BBC)

BBC Customer Service Associate

The BBC Customer Service Associate requires working in a retail operation and serves as an information desk in the Bowling & Billiards Center. The BBC Customer Service Associate will also be charged with distributing current and consistent information about the Department of Campus Recreation to all guests of the facility. This position must also enforce Campus Recreation rules and procedures in a fair and professional manner and have strong interpersonal and customer service skills during interactions with every guest that utilizes the Bowling & Billiards Center.  The BBC Customer Service Associate will be responsible for checking in guests for all activities in the facility. They are responsible for answering the telephone, sales transactions for the retail operation, supporting lane reservations, accepting deposits and completion of Facility Request forms. Other duties include preparation and stocking merchandise, oversight of cleanliness of Bowling & Billiards areas, fixing common lane problems, accepting deliveries, and providing support in emergency situations.

BBC Facility Manager *Internal Position Only*

The BBC Facility Manager position is critical to the successful daily operation of the Bowling & Billiards Center.  The BBC Facility Manager will be responsible for the opening, closing and daily operation of the facility as well as serve as the point of contact when Professional Staff are unavailable.  BBC Facility Managers will be expected to assist in the training of student team members, and this position will provide oversight for up to six student team members per shift.  BBC Facility Managers will be responsible for consistently enforcing Campus Recreation rules and procedures with Team Members and Guests. Completing hourly participation counts, detailed record keeping, and documentation, and fixing common stops on Pinsetter equipment is a requirement.  BBC Facility Managers will schedule reservations for bowling lanes and billiards tables and process Facility Request forms. The BBC Facility Managers will be responsible for overseeing the Emergency Action Plan when necessary and the reports that go along with it. Fiscal responsibilities include but not limited to cash drawer counts and end of shift reports.

  • Competitive Sports

Competitive Sports Supervisor * Internal Promotion Only*

The Competitive Sports Supervisor is responsible for all Competitive Sports activities in a given space, which can include facility logistics, risk management (incident & injury management), and maintaining a positive, safe experience for Illinois State Competitive Sports program participants. Competitive Sports Supervisors must be equipped to teach Competitive Sports team members and have a versed knowledge of Campus Recreation policies and procedures.  Competitive Sports Supervisors will provide the lead in emergency situations and must also possess the ability to communicate effectively with Competitive Sports participants and officials alike.

  • Operating Hours: Sun-Thu, 2:30 pm–11:45 pm; occasional Saturdays & Sundays, 7 am-5:30 pm (depends on event schedule)

Competitive Sports Monitor

The Competitive Sports Monitor has responsibilities in both Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs, and could support both program areas over the course of a shift. The Competitive Sports Monitor is responsible for assisting the Competitive Sports Supervisor with the logistics of a night of Competitive Sports. This would require different responsibilities depending on the assigned area, but could include event set-up and tear-down, participant check-in for Intramural Sports, performing Sport Club roster checks, keeping equipment inventory, working with club leaders on upcoming deadlines and events, providing support in emergency situations, and providing quality customer service at all times.

Intramural Sports Official

The Intramural Sports Official is responsible for creating a safe, positive experience for Illinois State Intramural Sports participants. While the primary role is officiating Intramural Sports activities, this position will also assist with event management including set-up and tear down, participant interaction, and other duties as assigned. Officials need to communicate effectively, work well on a team and demonstrate a desire to improve. Officials’ training is provided, but a basic knowledge of the sports the applicant intends to work in is recommended.

  • Esports

Esports Facility Supervisor

Esports Facility Supervisors will be responsible for the daily supervision of Illinois State University Esports facilities. Primary duties will include supervision, access control, risk management, troubleshooting, student engagement, and other duties essential for the effective operation of the facilities and equipment. Esports Facility Supervisors will enforce policies and procedures in a professional manner and ensure the appropriate use and cleanliness of equipment. As the first source of interaction with students and guests, the Esports Facility Supervisors will be responsible for providing basic program information for the Redbird Esports program as well as Campus Recreation events and services. This role may also involve standing on your feet for extended periods of time. Previous knowledge of esports, gaming, and/or computer is required. Students may be scheduled during university holiday breaks including Fall, Winter, and Spring breaks. Students will not be scheduled during University closures.

Events and Outreach Coordinator

The Events and Outreach Coordinator will serve as the lead for the Events and Outreach Redbird Esports Network team. Their duties will include maintaining a calendar of club and outreach activities, nurturing relationships with other RSOs, preparing records and reports on attendance at events, reserving event spaces, and meeting regularly with Esports staff. Must have a strong knowledge of event management and risk management practices and be proficient in Discord, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office.

Broadcast and Production Coordinator

The Broadcasting and Production Coordinator will serve as the lead for the Broadcasting and Production Redbird Esports Network team. Their duties will include creating and maintaining broadcast schedules for the Redbird Esports and Redbird Gaming Twitch and YouTube channels, informing production staff of call times and schedule changes, coordinating and promoting podcast and video content, and meeting regularly with Esports staff. They will also be responsible for documenting and contributing to the Redbird Esports knowledge base. Must have a strong knowledge of technical broadcasting and production equipment, streaming platforms, and be proficient in Discord, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office.

Social Media and Marketing Coordinator

The Social Media and Marketing Coordinator will serve as the lead for the Social Media and Marketing Redbird Esports Network team. Their duties will include developing strategies to promote Redbird Esports and Redbird Gaming RSOs, ensuring brand integrity with University of Marketing and Communications and Campus Recreation Marketing, creating high quality digital and physical content, run and maintain social media and marketing analytics, and meeting regularly with Esports staff.  They will also be responsible for documenting and contributing to the redbird esports knowlege base. Must have at least a basic knowledge of social media and marketing strategies, content creation tools, such as Adobe Creative Cloud (i.e., Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign, Premier, and Lightroom), and be proficient in Discord, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office.

Technology and Digital Development Coordinator

The Technology and Digital Development Coordinator will serve as the lead for the Technology and Digital Development Redbird Esports Network team. Their duties will include developing, expanding, and maintaining the Redbird Esports Discord server (including; API integrations, moderation, and bot(s)), coordinating with the Events and Outreach staff to ensure equipment is functional prior to events, and working with other coordinators to integrate API in different facets of production and event experience. They will also be responsible for documenting and contributing to the Redbird Esports knowledge base. Must have knowledge of coding languages (preferred multiple proficiencies), discord.js, and be proficient in Discord, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office.

  • Fitness

Group Fitness Instructor

Responsibilities include designing and implementing safe and effective group fitness classes for participants with varying fitness levels, set up/tear down of equipment, leading group fitness classes in accordance with the American Council on Exercise, the American College of Sports Medicine, and ISU safety standards, and maintaining a high level of motivation while demonstrating a friendly, energetic and caring demeanor. Instructors must maintain current fitness knowledge through continuing education and attendance at mandatory team meetings and training. Anyone interested in becoming a group fitness instructor must complete the Group Fitness Instructor Training Course OR hold an NCCA accredited Group Fitness certification prior to being hired. Candidates must successfully complete an interview and audition to join our fitness team.

  • Average hours: Min. teaching 1-4 classes per week, Mandatory team meetings twice per semester

Personal Trainer

Responsibilities include prescribing and conducting safe and effective exercise programs for a diverse client population, providing functional fitness assessments, assisting with equipment orientations as needed, leading sessions in accordance with American Council on Exercise, the American College of Sports Medicine, and ISU safety standards, and maintaining a high level of motivation while demonstrating a friendly, energetic and caring demeanor. Trainers must maintain current fitness knowledge through continuing education and attendance at mandatory team meetings and trainings. Anyone interested in becoming a personal trainer must complete the Personal Trainer Prep Course OR hold an NCCA accredited Personal Training certification prior to being hired. Candidates must successfully complete an interview and audition to join our fitness team.

  • Marketing

Graphic Designer

Responsibilities include using graphic design and marketing skills to create and produce fliers, posters, brochures, and other promotional materials for the department. The designer will also provide website and digital signage updates. Required proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail and the ability to proofread projects. Skills in photography and video editing are also desired.

Marketing Assistant

Responsibilities include providing support for a variety of department marketing efforts. Duties may include but are not limited to, posting print and digital signage in the Student Fitness Center and campus, taking photos/videos and utilizing editing software to create promotional videos, assisting in the design and development of effective social media campaigns, coordinating items for outreach events, analyzing marketing data, and assisting in various writing activities. Ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate creativity and experience in several of the duties listed.

  • Student Fitness Center (SFC)

Facility Manager *Internal Position Only*

The Facility Manager position is critical to the successful daily operation of the Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall.  The Facility Manager will be responsible for the opening, closing and daily operation of the nearly 170,000 square foot facility as well as serve as the point of contact when Professional Staff are unavailable.  Facility Managers will be expected to assist in the training of student team members, and this position will provide oversight to as many as 12 student team members per shift.  Facility Managers will be responsible for consistently enforcing Campus Recreation rules and regulations with team members and patrons. Completing hourly participation counts, detailed record keeping, and documentation is a requirement.  Fiscal responsibilities include but not limited to cash drawer counts, reconciliations, and deposits

Facility Assistant

Facility Assistants are responsible for providing excellent customer service to guests of the Student Fitness Center. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to, monitoring the different facility areas and fitness floors throughout the Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall, restocking first aid kits and towels for equipment usage, enforcing Campus Recreation rules and regulations in a professional manner, and ensuring the appropriate use and cleanliness of equipment. Facility Assistants will provide basic knowledge about fitness equipment to guests on the fitness floor and will build awareness of programs and events that are being offered through the Student Fitness Center & McCormick Hall. Additional responsibilities include oversight and supervision of sport court areas, ensuring antibacterial spray bottles are available to patrons as well as setting up of equipment such as volleyball and badminton nets for open rec play as well as various setups for KNR classes held in the Student Fitness Center & McCormick gymnasiums. Previous knowledge and background in health, wellness, and/or exercise science is preferred but not required.

Member Services Associate

Responsibilities include membership, towel and locker sales, activity and sports registration, sporting equipment checkout, and facility access for all guests that enter the facility. This position must also enforce Campus Recreation rules and regulations in a fair and professional manner and have strong interpersonal and customer service skills during interactions with all guests that utilize the Student Fitness Center. The Membership Service Associate position will also be charged with distributing current and consistent information about the Department of Campus Recreation to all guests of the facility. Member Services Associates will also assist with ensuring laundry is clean and folded for the department during each shift. Strong background knowledge of the SFCM equipment, spaces, and programs is necessary to be successful in the MSA role. Ability to learn knowledge of SFCM equipment, spaces, and programs is necessary to be successful in the MSA role.

Service Tech

Responsibilities include cleaning and preventative maintenance of cardio, strength, and sports equipment. Additional duties will include detailed recordkeeping, inventory control, and moving/assembling equipment as needed. The Service Tech must be able to lift 50 lbs., stand, kneel and bend over repeatedly. Desired qualifications include: mechanical aptitude, ability to identify and use a variety of hand and power tools; ability to problem solve; and work both independently and as a team.
